People often ask us how neck pain occurs? In our Sandyford physiotherapy clinic we see alot of people who present with neck pain & headaches, neck pain & jaw pain or tmj pain, and neck pain on their left side or neck pain on the right side.

Neck pain Causes

It can be debilitating both physically and mentally. Improving function through physiotherapy can lead you to decreased pain and improve your lifestyle. Most of the time, people are unsure of the causes of neck pain. Common reasons our patients think their neck pain develops include pain from working at a desk, or neck pain from sleeping on a poor pillow. Our patients often get neck pain into the shoulder. This is also very common. The shoulder and neck are inextricably linked. Pain in the shoulder and neck at the same time is actually quite common.

Left Side Neck Pain / Right Side Neck Pain

How neck pain occurs is often multifactorial and does not come down to one thing. The most important thing is to get relief. Relief can be achieved via exercises or manual therapy. In both our Sandyford and Rathfarnham physiotherapy clinics, our physios specialise in reaching the source of of your pain and alleviating that “left side neck pain”, or that “neck pain on the right side”.

Whiplash is a common form of neck pain. The mechanism of injury is often post road traffic accident but it can also be attained through contact in sport or other traumatic events that leads to rapid excessive neck movement.

Interestingly we regularly see brilliant in session neck pain relief, which decreases headaches caused by neck pain. Neck pain exercises are also a key pillar of our ability to relieve neck pain symptoms.

Which pillow for neck pain?

This is a question we get asked in our physio clinic. Normally it is important to have a well supported pillow, and often that will help alleviate the right side neck pain/left side neck pain you are experencing.

Whiplash is estimated to cost £3 billion in the `UK annually.  Most patients demonstrate a uncomplicated clinical picture with mild to moderate levels of pain and disability, local sensitivity over the neck joint, mild psychological distress and motor dysfunction. Stress and lack of sleep is often associated with whiplash post injury. This in turn can increase the symptoms of whiplash, leading to prolonged rehabilitation, time out of work and time out of sport.
